About Mercy

“The best thing to come out of the Mersey basin since the Manchester Ship Canal” - Anthony Wilson (RIP)

Mercy is a Liverpool-based team of irrational creatives who specialise in supporting emerging talent. We do this by producing art exhibitions, live literature events, AV performances and music gigs – all alongside a quarterly magazine that is distributed across the UK.

“Ambitious and confident” - Jarvis Cocker

We also collaborate with other groups and individuals from across the UK and Europe. In 5 years, we have initiated over 30 new projects, worked with more than 400 people from 14 countries, and have produced nearly 30 brand new commissions.

“Disposable and vital” - MAP Magazine

The front-line of our organisation is the self-titled Mercy Magazine. Founded in 2002, it is made up of contributions from an international network of over-achieving thinkers and do-ers. It is a diverse spread of graphic design, illustration, photography, creative writing, journalism and poetry. Mercy Magazine is published quarterly and has a UK circulation of 2,000. It is available to pick up for free, in a targeted network of art galleries, cafes, bars, record stores, book shops, boutiques and universities - it is also available to download for free online.

“Innovative and compulsive” - Metro

We also regularly produce cross-disciplinary events and exhibitions - these range from one-off events to month-long shows and on-going exhibition programmes, and have graced select locations across the UK - including art galleries, clubs, and other public spaces, with capacities ranging from 200 to 1,000. By combining fresh ideas with distinctive design, Mercy’s events programme has received plaudits from international press and visitors. Our tried and tested formula puts fine art in the gallery and fills any remaining floor space with regular performances by bands, poets and experimental AV shenanigans.

“Reclaiming ‘culture’ for the kids” - The Face

Commercially, Mercy have worked with the likes of Levi’s, Stella Artois, Diesel, Red Stripe, Urban Splash and Dazed & Confused, providing a variety of journalism, copywriting and event management & promotion.

We have performed, curated and exhibited at Tate Liverpool, Whitechapel Art Gallery, FACT, the Bluecoat, Latitude Festival, Urbis and the Notting Hill Arts Club.

We have run up column inches in Sunday Times Style, Dazed & Confused, The Face, The Guardian, Metro, Marmalade and more, and have been heard banging on about ‘zines and culture on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 4.

Mercy was shortlisted for the Dazed / TopShop RE:CREATION Awards in 2003, and was selected as ‘Curator’s Choice’ in the inaugural NOISE Festival in the UK in 2006.

“The stuff of creative legend” - Marmalade Magazine

Mercy are currently preparing 4 live literature / music / performance events (’Wave If You’re Really There’) in partnership with the Arts Council, to take place in Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year, 2008. ‘The Anticlimax Issue’ is available now from stockists nationwide, or to download from this site.
